about Joseph

Joseph is a human rights advocate who helps people living in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa to get the assistance they need from the government and NGOs. He also runs the Kibera Joy Initiative, a registered community based organisation that supports young men and women in urban, low income areas to live decent lives, which, in turn, supports them in contributing to the social and economic life of Kibera. KJI is an entirely volunteer based organisation and is currently working with Plan International delivering programs which help keep Nairobians safe on public transport during the COVID crisis. https://www.facebook.com/KiberaJoyInitiative/

Kibera Joy Initiative seeks to “create an enabling environment for young people living in the informal settlements of Kibera.”

KJI was formed based on a commitment to educating the local communities and is committed helping to keep young people safe from violence, illness, and injustice. Its activities include regular community dialogues on issues including:
— gender-based violence
— risky sexual behaviour, and
— economic empowerment

KJI volunteers visit the homes of more than 600 local families in need, to support them through community engagement, to distribute sanitary towels, soap, and vital food supplies. During Covid-19, KJI is continuing to engage with and deliver supplies to these vulnerable families in safe and non-contact ways, and is partnering with local churches and NGOs to distribute vital food and other supplies to struggling families.

“[KJI’s] activities are driven by volunteers because we are driven by passion and commitment to the communities that we once came from and are often still a part of.”

- Joseph, founder of KJI

Through a grant, Pambanisha supports Joseph’s advocacy

How does this happen?

1.

Pambanisha primarily supports Joseph’s work through providing a monthly stipend, to ensure he has health insurance and coverage for his basic living expenses.

2.

In the future, the Pambanisha board would like to be able to more directly fund Joseph’s work, by supporting KJI to extend the community outreach and public information programs.
